Women’s Basketball Week in Review

The HLGU Women’s Basketball Team played three games in the last week. The first was played on Thursday, December 2.

The Lady Trojans traveled to St. Louis to take on the Missouri Baptist Spartans to kick off conference play for the season. The Spartans started off strong going on a 12-0 run in the first quarter. HLGU struggled to stop the three from Missouri Baptist in the second quarter as they went 6-11 and took a 49-22 lead into halftime. The Spartan defense controlled the Trojan offense in the third quarter allowing just two points. The Trojans committed 26 turnovers en route to a 44-77 loss. Coach Quigle said, “We struggled tonight against their pressure and transition.”

Jillian Lockard led the team with 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Ashlyn Vermeer recorded 10 points, and nine rebounds.

The next game came on Saturday, December 4 at home against the Central Baptist College Mustangs. This game started off similarly to the last for the Trojans with Central Baptist going on a 12-0 run to start the game. HLGU chipped away at the Mustang lead in the second quarter taking a six point deficit into the half. Central Baptist controlled the rest of the game forcing 22 Trojan turnovers and scoring 21 points off of them. The Mustangs would go on to win 67-45.

Eliana McClarie made three of the team’s four three pointers scoring 11 points, four assists, and two rebounds. Malea Payne recorded seven points, four rebounds, and two assists.

The third game was a home matchup with Missouri Valley College on Monday, December 6. Missouri Valley shot 4-7 from three-point range to take a 24-9 lead into the end of the first quarter. The Trojans fought throughout the second quarter cutting down the Viking lead a bit going into halftime down 13. HLGU continued to fight the rest of the game but could not cut into Missouri Valley’s lead. The Vikings would go on to win 71-50.

Laura Calvin scored six points, five rebounds, and two assists in the loss while Ashlyn Vermeer led the team in scoring with 14 points and adding four rebounds.

The Lady Trojan’s next game will be an exhibition matchup on Friday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m. against Quincy University across the river in Quincy, Illinois. The HLGU Lady Trojans look to put a stop to their five game skid when they take on Central Christian College of the Bible Saturday, December 11 at 1 p.m. in Moberly, Missouri.
