Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans men’s basketball team hosted their home opener against Iowa Wesleyan University November 13. The game had a packed crowd and a good environment with a lot of HLGU students and alumni coming out to watch the game.

Early on it looked like it was going to be an interesting game with neither team being able to pull away from each other until HLGU was able to have a 4 point lead at half. In the 2nd half, HLGU struggled on defense allowing Iowa Wesleyan point guard, Joey Brown to go off and score most of his 21 points in the 2nd half. Iowa Wesleyan’s other players contributing and scoring when they needed to stretched the gap between the Trojans and the Tigers to as much as 15 at one point.

After this the Trojans were fighting a losing battle to fix the scoring gap created. The Trojans went on to lose 67 to 78. Although it is a good sign that we can compete with teams, the team and coaches are concerned that they struggle to finish out the 2nd half of these games. Coach Durst alluded about this in a postgame interview, “Our defensive effort in the 2nd half continues to be a struggle. We have to finish games and find a way to compete in both halves.”

The Trojans next game was Tuesday the 16th at home against Culver Stockton College which resulted in a loss with similar second half issues.
