XC Faces Tough Competition in Columbia

The men’s and women’s cross country teams went on the road on Friday, October 1, traveling to Columbia to compete in the Gans Creek Classic. The event was hosted by the University of Missouri and featured some of the toughest competition from across the country.

The men competed in the open 8000 meter run, and finished in seventh place of seven teams. Senior Cyle Butenhoff finished first out of the HLGU competitors with a 32nd place finish, and a time of 27 minutes 47 seconds.

Coming in second and third out of the HLGU runners was sophomore Alec Whitener and junior Cameron Deatherage. They finished 46th and 47th with times within one second of each other coming in at 28 minutes and 19 seconds, and 28 minutes and 20 seconds.

The men competed in the open 6000 meter run, and finished in ninth place out of nine teams. Senior Elle Hudelson finished first out of the HLGU women’s runners with a 42nd place finish overall. She had a time of 25 minutes and 20 seconds.

Second and third place finishers for the HLGU women were freshmen Harlee Hughes and Karoline Kolie. Each finished within a minute of each other with Hughes finishing in 28 minutes and 34 seconds, and Kolie in 29 minutes and 16 seconds. They finished in 69th and 70th place, respectively.

Both teams go on the road again Friday, October 8, as they travel to Elsah, Illinois, competing in the Border War XC Championship. The women are scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m. with the men starting at 5:30 p.m.
