Samuel “Screech” Powers, or more formally known as Dustin Diamond, passed away on February 1st, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. Diamond was an actor, director, musician, and comedian. His most known role was in the Saved by the Bell series. He began his role in 1988 as ‘Screech’ at the beginning of the life of Saved by the Bell on a show titled “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” which followed Powers and co-star/running mate and best friend Zach Morris and friends through their younger years.
Saved by the Bell was a hit show through the late 80s into the early 90s. Immediately following Good Morning, Miss Bliss, the inception of Saved by the Bell was born. The show’s premise followed a group of friends throughout high school touching on serious issues that stand true to this day along with lighthearted comedic relief. The show spawned two more series one being the 2020 reboot as well as two TV movies.
Diamond began his stand up comedy career following the end of the hit sitcom. He also made several cameos on many different television shows, like game show The Weakest Link, and reality shows Celebrity Boxing 2 and Celebrity Fit Club. As well as making appearances in the movies Made, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, American Pie: The Book of Love, a spinoff of the American Pie series, and he played a supporting role in a sports comedy in Tetherball: The Movie.
Diamond had his share of controversies and bad luck … from filing for bankruptcy to publishing a book regarding behind the scenes of Saved by the Bell that did not go well nor make many happy. Along with many arrests and sentencings, Diamond’s life seemed to be going into a tailspin, and in early January 2021, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He completed just one round of chemotherapy before passing only three and a half weeks later.
