The St. Louis are facing adversity once again. For the first time since 2015, the Cardinals finished atop the NL Central division.
In game 3, the Atlanta Braves rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning at Busch Stadium on Sunday. Cardinal closer, Carlos Martinez, was unable to stop the potent Atlanta offense once again. Veteran pitcher, Adam Wainright, was suburb on the hill. Wainwright finished the game in the 7th inning with 2 outs. He allowed 4 hits and only walking two and striking out 8.
Dansby Swanson tied the game at 1 run a piece with a double of the wall with 2 outs. Adam Duvall followed with a 2-run double to take a 3-1 lead. St. Louis was unable to rally in the bottom of the 9th, losing 1-3.
Following the loss, St. Louis fans were directing a lot of hatred towards the team. Manager, Mike Schildt, says there is only one goal every time they step on the field. “We play to win” said Schildt.
St. Louis faced playoff elimination for the first time in 2019 in Game 4, Monday, October 7th. The game was tied going into the 9th. Both the Braves and Cards threatened to take the lead, but the game extended to the 10th.
The Braves went scoreless in the top of the 10th. Kolten Wong led off for the Cards with an opposite-field double, followed by an intentional walk of Paul Goldschmidt. Then Marcell Ozuna advanced Wong to third on a fielder’s choice. Yadier Molina lifted a deep fly ball to left for a game-winning sac fly. This is just the third time that the Cards have won on a walk-off in an elimination game.
Game 5 between the Cardinals and Braves will be in Atlanta on Wednesday.
