Hannibal-LaGrange University fall athletics are in full swing. Trojan athletes have been competing heavily in American Midwest Conference competitions. HLGU soccer, volleyball, and cross country have each reached the midway point in the 2019-20 season.
The Trojan volleyball team has struggled in 2019 behind first year head coach Halee Hensley. However, the team has been competing at a high level with the tough competition in the AMC. The last Trojan victory was at Mabee Sports complex against the Stephens College Stars on September, 17th 2019. HLGU has lost 9 straight sets and are looking to find their groove. Clarke University will be the next competition for the Trojans.
HLGU runners have been nothing short of impressive in 2019. Two Trojans were awarded AMC runner of the week awards for their performances during the week of Sept. 16-22. Heiko Thiele won his first ever runner of the week award. He finished 17th out of 198 runners and covered an 8k course in 26:33. Shelby Kallem posted her second AMC runner of the week award in 2019. Kallem finished 19th of 213 and was the top NAIA finisher. At the Bradley Intercollegiate Invitational she finished the 3-mile run in a time of 18:33. The HLGU women’s team is receiving votes to be nationally ranked.
The HLGU women’s soccer team opened their season with a 6-0 win over Lincoln Christian University. However, since that mark the Lady Trojans have yet to be on the winning end of a matchup. The Trojans recently fell to Williams Baptist University, 0-2, after tying the Eutectics of St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Following the loss to the WBU Eagles, Trojans head coach, Jason Nichols, says he was please with the way the ladies never gave up. “Having more key injuries than usual, I was very proud of the effort today. The ladies battled for 90 minutes but unfortunately came up two goals short. Defensively, we became more organized and did not allow any goals in the second half.” The next matchup for the Trojans will be on Saturday, October 12th at 3:00 pm.
The Trojan soccer team has been impressive so far in 2019, posting a record of 7-3-1 thus far. HLGU was on a three-game winning streak before tying the WBU Eagles on Saturday, October 5th. The game against the Eagles was a special day, as HLGU recognized its two senior soccer players. Gabriel M Dias and Renato Barroso both are very thankful for their time here at HLGU. After asking Dias about his career as a Trojan he said he couldn’t be more thankful for this opportunity. “I have the opportunity to something bigger,” quoted Dias. “Or to even be something different from what I was taught back in my home.” HLGU Coach, David Erskine, says it is something special to be able to honor seniors on this day. “It is always an honor to recognize our seniors and I wish Renato and Gabe the best and thank them for being a part of the team.” The Trojans will now shift their focus to a Saturday matchup against the Freed-Hardeman Lions.
