This past weekend, the men’s and women’s cross country teams made the journey down to Memphis, TN to compete in the Memphis Twilight Cross County meet.
The Trojans were lead by Heiko Thiele and Shelby Kallem of the men’s and women’s teams respectively in their first ever trip to the meet. The men’s team finished with a team score of 215 points which was good enough for 8th place out of 11 teams competing. The women’s team took 9th out of 13 teams with a score of 276 points.
While the finishing places for the teams might not seem impressive, they also don’t tell the full story. The NAIA Trojans were competing and holding their own with NCAA Division I powerhouse schools like Alabama and Ole Miss.
In spite of the daunting competition, the Trojans ran great races on both the men’s and women’s sides by focusing on running as a pack and working as a team. Coach Andy Lemons remarked that it was possibly the best season opener performance that he has ever coached and that he’s excited to see what the rest of the season will bring.
The Trojans next competition is on the evening of Friday, September 6 at Culver Stockton.
