Hannibal-LaGrange University baseball welcomed one of the nations best baseball team on Friday, April 12th. The Lyon Scots came into the American Midwest Conference series ranked No. 17 in NAIA division I.
Game One: Win 8-3
Justin French was not afraid of the task at hand. The starter went 6.2 innings allowing 3 runs, only 2 of which were earned. Senior slugger Chet Merritt continued his onslaught at the plate with 2 hits. Merritt cleared the left field fence with a monster home run. Garrett Welschmeyer also added a home run of his own. Outfielder Jacob Bone also scored 3 runs with 2 hits. Lyon infielder Kylan Barrett was the only player in the lineup to reach 2 hits. Barrett also got the visitors on the scoreboard with a home run of his own. After losing game 1, the Scots came ready to play in game 2.
Game Two: Loss 9-29
Lyon came into the second game of the day ready to do one thing – score. The Scots plated 29 runs on a hitting onslaught. Trojan starter Grant Geppert only made it through 1 inning while allowing 10 runs. 4 different Scots recorded 3 hits, outfielder Jake Michener had 4 hits in the leadoff spot. Michener also added 6 RBI’s to the stat sheet, 2 other Scots had 4. HLGU outfielder Edwin Betancourt was steady at the plate for the Trojans in the second game. Betancourt had 3 hits with 3 RBI’s. At the end of the day the series was tied 1-1. After their scoring outburst Lyon was ready to take the series win back home to Arkansas.
Game Three: Loss 12-4
Lyon college came prepared to take the series win on Saturday. The Trojans held a 3-2 lead through 5 innings until the Scots offense came alive. VJ Vinson was the starting pitcher for the Trojans. Vinson allowed 5 runs, only 4 of which were earned. A 6-run 6th inning led the Scots to a 2-game series win over the Trojans. Hannibal was led by infielder Nelson Martinez at the plate. Martinez finished the game with 2 hits with 1 RBI. The Trojans will be playing again at home 4/17 against the Culver Stockton Wildcats! Come out and support the HLGU baseball team!
