The community of Parkland, Florida was in mourning on Wednesday, February 14 as former student
Nikolas Cruz shot and killed 17 and injured many others. According to Slate, Cruz was not allowed to carry a backpack onto school grounds due to his instability. Cruz also had a large amount of weapons-based posts on his various social media accounts.
The New York Times reported that Cruz arrived at Douglas High School in an Uber before walking in and beginning to shoot students in the hallway. Cruz killed 14 students and 3 staff members. NPR reported that there had been multiple 911 calls involving Cruz before the shooting.
19-year-old Cruz is facing 17 counts of premeditated murder and the possibility of being sentenced with the death penalty.
Local school districts stepped up their training and preparation for potential active shooter incidents. HLGU conducts active shooter training with faculty and staff during opening meetings in August and/or during closing sessions in May.
